What is Whois

Whois is the web protocol that allows you to discover important information regarding the domain in question.

Technically, Whois is a network protocol capable of querying a specific query and returns many useful pieces of information, such as the domain holder and the expiration date of the same.

What whois is used for and how it works

Whois exploits the databases of clients (using the IP address and DNS).

There are many ways to access Whois:

The more tech-savvy can do it from the command line by entering whois domainname.ext

Those who browse the web will be able to query Whois through many online tools including:

In whois you will find various information about the queried domain:

  • Who is the registrar: who manages the domain (Aruba, Netsons, etc...);
  • Who is the Registrant: the domain owner;
  • Contacts: the contact details of the owner;
  • Name server: the DNS and where they point to;
  • Status of the domain: whether it is available, registered, what is the activation date and what is the expiration date.

PLEASE NOTE: in some cases, the registrant hides their data to protect their privacy but the register will remain visible.

Those who work in web and those who need to transfer domains or point DNS from one domain to another often require this information.

So use Whois to discover everything you can about the domain you are interested in!
