What is opt-out

Opt-out is a withdrawal, where a user subscribed to a mailing list requests the cessation of receiving informative or promotional emails.

The opt-out involves sending informative, commercial, and advertising communications to consumers without their permission.

For example: the company sends a message to the consumer for an initial contact offering them the option to refuse further messages.

In the absence of such refusal, the company may continue to send commercial communications to the user until they declare they are not interested.

Difference between Opt-in and Opt-out

Both definitions belong to the category of e-mail marketing.

The Opt-in is a user's consent to be included in a  mailing list and receive advertising communications.

The user, therefore, provides their email address and the processing of personal data.

Thus, while in opt-out there must be a waiver of sending personalized emails, in the case of opt-in there must be a subscription.

An example of an opt-out system may be the possibility of being contacted for commercial purposes on one's telephone services.

In this case, indeed, the law allows the professional to contact potential customers without needing their consent.
