What is a follower

When talking about followers, it refers to a user who decides to view the content of another user, in order to stay updated on all published posts.
The most famous social networks like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook have their own dedicated section, which allows for the communication of news to their recipients.

The content of this section is different for each social network, but generally always contains posts, articles, images, and videos from people or even influencers that the user has decided to follow and receive updates from. 

How do you become a follower?

To become a full-fledged follower, each social network has its own procedure:

  • Facebook: you simply need to follow or "Like" a page of your interest, which is used by businesses for commercial purposes;
  • Twitter, YouTube, or Instagram: becoming a follower varies, all profiles are public, so any user can follow any other user. On Twitter and Instagram there's a difference between followers and following: for followers it means to be "followed", while for following, it means to follow someone.
    Usually, users manage to find people or brands to follow thanks to blogs, news sites, or automatic suggestions that come from the platform itself.

Why is it important to have many followers?

When planning to have many followers it's because there are two goals:
  • Becoming an influencer or brand ambassador: to promote products or services of one or more companies;
  • Advertising one's brand or image: so as to sell their products or services.

In essence, the purpose of having many followers is to earn money, directly or indirectly, through the use of social networks.

To conclude, followers differ from likes, tweets, and shares because they indicate that people find only certain content interesting.

A follower expresses the interest of a person, a company, or a used service.
