Track traffic coming from referring websites (all or specific)

This guide is designed for non-technical users and will walk you through setting up tracking of traffic coming from external websites (referrers), both in general and for specific domains.

Guide: Tracking Traffic from Referring Websites

Referrer tracking allows you to record when a visitor arrives on your website by clicking on a link coming from another external domain.

Prerequisites

You need to have created an active Tracking project.

Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Access the Tracking Project

1. Go to the Tracking Projects management section.

2. Click on the existing project you want to modify, or create a New Project.

3. Fill in the required fields in the Project Data section (such as Project Name and Enabled Domain).

4. Click Next to proceed to the Goals section.

2. Activate the Referrer Goal

1. In the Goals section, locate the box related to the Referrer action (Referring Website).

2. If the box is not active, click the Activate button inside it.

3. Choose the Tracking Method

Inside the Referrer box, you must decide which referring sites to track.

1. In the field Referrers to track*, select one of the following options:

  • Track all referring websites (Recommended Option): Select this if you want to track any external site directing traffic to your domain.
  • Manually enter the list of referrers: Select this if you want to track only specific websites.

4. Configure Tracking (General Option)

If you chose Track all referring websites:

1. Make sure the checkbox Enable under Third-party Tracking is checked.

2. Scroll down to view the configuration section for Events for external platforms (such as Meta Ads, Google Ads, etc.).

3. Set up tracking parameters for each platform (for example, entering a specific event name or value).

5. Configure Tracking (Manual Option)

If you chose Manually enter the list of referrers:

1. Scroll down to the Referrers to track section.

2. Click on the Add Referrer button.

3. In the Website field, enter the exact domain of the site you want to track (e.g., externalblog.com).

4. If you want tracking to activate even if only part of the referrer's URL matches the entered domain, check the box Allow partial match search.

5. For this specific referrer, make sure that the checkbox Enable under Third-party Tracking is checked.

6. Configure Events for external platforms specific to this referrer.

7. Repeat steps 2 through 6 for each specific referring site you wish to track.

6. Save Changes

1. Once configuration is complete, click on the Save button to apply the goal to your Tracking project.
