What are dealers brands

Dealer brands are products marketed under the distributor's brand rather than that of the manufacturer.

They are also known as private label products, meaning they bear the name of the brand associated with the store's own signage.

In practice, these are products that have the label with the supermarket's own name, and they are usually cheaper compared to others.

The dealer brand is also known as MDD (distributor's brand). These allow for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises and the distribution of qualitatively good products at lower prices compared to other brands.

Trust between MDD and consumer

Thanks to the elimination of intermediaries in the supply chain, a trust relationship has been created towards the Distributor's Brand, in which values and the image of both the brand and the supermarket where consumers regularly purchase their products are recognized.

Over time, the Distributor's Brand product of guaranteed quality has been recognized, offering a favorable price-quality ratio and an adequate level of service has been attributed to meet one's needs.

Italian suppliers of dealer brands

The MDD represents a significant development opportunity in the market for large, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Thanks to the MDD, these companies have had the chance to operate in the Italian market of any size, and to come into contact with large distribution companies and be able to derive the fundamental elements to improve the efficiency of services.

In addition to industrial products, the MDD has seen significant growth in fresh products, enriching the market and making it increasingly relevant for Italian supply chains.

The major Italian MDDs are:

  • Conad;
  • Despar;
  • Coop;
  • Tigre.

In some cases the product belongs to the supermarket's own brand but differs in name: an example can be: Gala supermarkets, formerly A&O, which now promotes its own brand products under the name selex.
